Maths in Key Stage 1 and Early Years

At Banks Road we want every child to develop confidence and competence in Maths through engaging and exciting learning opportunities.

This is a guide to the steps your child will experience in Maths lessons. We believe that all children, when introduced to a key new concept, should have the opportunity to build competency in this topic by taking this approach:

Concrete (Developing Conceptual Understanding) - children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.

Pictorial (with jottings) - children should then build on this concrete approach by using pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to reason and solve problems.

Abstract (mental) - with the foundations firmly laid children should then be able to move to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence.

Number is at the heart of everything we do and a large proportion of time is spent reinforcing number to build competency. Fluency, reasoning and problem solving are key elements of the curriculum and are incorporated into every lesson.

We always encourage children to ask themselves these questions:

Can I do this in my head?

What practical equipment could I use to help me?

Could I do this in my head using drawings or jottings to help me?

Can I use a written method?

What is the most sensible strategy I could use?


For further information on the specific ways that we teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in school please read the following documents.  It is probably quite different to the way you were taught at school so if you have any questions or don't understand a method we use please ask your child's class teacher.  They will be happy to help.

Learning Environments
We strongly believe that Maths should be taught across the curriculum, so as well as taught sessions we aim for Maths to surround children in their day to day experiences. 
As well as specific Maths zones we strive to ensure our children have a maths-rich environment throughout all our indoor and outdoor provision. 
Curriculum Prioritisation
As a result of the interruptions to learning caused by the coronavirus outbreak the NCETM have produced a Curriculum Prioritisation Document that we will be following in Year 1 and Year 2. This will support classroom learning and meet the needs of pupils with varied starting points.

We support our children to problem solve, reason and learn from their mistakes.
We follow the White Rose Maths schemes of learning in KS1 and a range of NCETM Mastery Resources to spark the children's curiosity and excitement. 
We use Number Sense Maths for a highly visual number fact teaching programme that leads to a deep understanding of number and number relationships, and fluency in addition and subtraction facts.

Numberblocks is a pre-school BBC television series aimed at introducing children to early number. In our Early Years Foundation Stage we use each episode as a launch pad for the children's learning alongside accompanying materials and a range of related Mathematical continuous provision.
