Learning in Reception

Autumn term

In the Autumn term the children learnt about the people who help us in our community, our personal heroes. We are very lucky to know some real life superheroes who came to visit us such as Nurses, Pharmacists, Hair dressers, Healthcare Assistants etc. Our learning then progressed into fictional superheroes such as Supertato.

In the second half of Autumn term we then prepared for our Christmas show, we learnt all about the birth of Baby Jesus and how families celebrate at this time of year, with reference to those who follow the Christian faith. We also learnt about the importance of giving to others through circle times and reflection opportunities as well as the children buying gifts for their loved ones at our pound shop.
 Spring Term

In Spring we have a big focus on traditional tales and fairytale stories. This topic allows ample opportunities for children to develop their narrative skills as we focus on story telling using props, story maps, actions and songs. We know that this has a positive impact on the children's language development and can be implemented into their role-play.

In the second half of spring term we have allocated time for children to have autonomy over the topics we will link into our learning, for example in previous years the children had a love of dinosaurs and pets, so all of our learning, from reading, to writing, to maths was based upon these.
